WINONA, Minn. — Last season,
Mariana Sanchez (Puebla, Mexico) finished with 71 saves in 10 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games, and her performance was good enough to earn the then-junior honorable-mention All-MIAC honors.
This year, the senior goalkeeper did herself one better — make that 10 better, as Sanchez led the league in saves with 81.
And she did herself one better in the post-season honors as well, as Sanchez was named to the All-MIAC First Team, it was announced Thursday.
Sanchez is the lone goalkeeper on the 20-player all-conference team, which is led by MIAC Player of the Year Sam Johnson of Concordia. Cobber head coach Dan Weiler made it a Concordia clean sweep, as he was named MIAC Coach of the Year.
Sanchez played every minute of every conference game for the Cardinals, who finished with a 3-7-1 MIAC mark, after failing to win an MIAC game a year ago. Along with her league-high 81 saves, Sanchez also led the conference in saves-per-game (7.36), while also compiling a 1.31 goals-against-average and an .844 save percentage.
Sanchez started all 18 games for SMU, closing out her senior season boasting a career-best 1.05 goals-against-average and an .842 save percentage. She finished with a season-high five shutouts this season and ended her collegiate career with 12 shutouts, tying her with Jennifer Johnson for fifth all-time in career shutouts.
Teammate
Amy Sibik (Onalaska, Wis.) was an honorable-mention All-MIAC selection, after scoring four goals and tallying nine points in 11 conference games. For the entire 18-game season, Sibik scored a team-leading 14 goals. Her 14 goals are a single-season career high and give her 34 for her career — moving Sibik within three goals of Barb Bock for No. 6 all-time.
As part of a conference-wide sportsmanship initiative, the MIAC also announced the fourth annual All-MIAC Sportsmanship team for women's soccer, which included SMU's
Stephanie Marnocha (Appleton, Wis.). Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.
