: The Johnnies scored seven unanswered goals, including five in the second period, as Saint John's handed the Cardinals an 8-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback Saturday at the National Hockey Center.

A Year Ago: SMU and Saint John's split their conference series last year at the SMU Ice Arena on Nov. 16-17. The Johnnies scored the game's first two goals and never looked back in beating the Cardinals 4-2 in the opener. SMU turned the tables in the rematch a day later, as the Cardinals scored three powerplay goals and goalie Dan Smith made 41 saves to lead SMU to a 3-2 MIAC victory, snapping the year's 0-4-1 start — and giving them their first win since a 5-4 overtime victory over Hamline on Jan. 26, 2007 — a span of 12 games.

Cardinal Notes: SMU's Steve Murphy (Anchorage, Alaska) and Mike Glaesmer (Traverse City, Mich.) each had a goal and an assist vs. the Johnnies Friday evening. … Friday's loss to the Johnnies was the Cardinals' sixth straight. … The Cardinals' three goals vs. Augsburg Saturday were scored by three different players — Tony Clafton (Grand Rapids, Minn.), Glaesmer and Matt Staehely (Shorewood, Ill.). … Murphy scored both goals for the Cardinals vs. Augsburg last Friday and currently leads the team with 11 goals. Morgan Shepherd (Brainerd, Minn.) and Jeff Miller (Portage, Mich.), meanwhile, both assisted on each of Murphy's goals last Friday. … The two-goal game was the third of the season for Murphy, who now leads the team with 19 points.  Murphy is one of five players with 10 or more points. Glaesmer, #A.J. Woodward# (Lenexa, Kan.), Staehely and Anthony Bohn (Spring Hill, Fla.) are the other three, boasting 15, 13, 10 and 10 points, respectively. … Woodward, who assisted on one of SMU's two goals vs. SJU Saturday, leads the team in assists with 10. …  SMU's six goals, 10 assists and 16 points vs. Bethel on Jan. 30 all equaled the team's season highs. St. Norbert entered its Jan. 10 game vs. SMU as the nation's fourth-ranked team, while UW-Stout was ranked seventh. … SMU has played four overtime games this season. The Cardinals are 2-1-1 in those four games, with wins over Concordia (6-5) and UW-River Falls (2-1), a 7-6 loss to defending MIAC regular-season champion Hamline and a 3-3 tie vs. Concordia. … Murphy's goal 1:31 into the opening period Friday vs. Augsburg marked just the third time in 21 games that the Cardinals have scored first. Trevor Tolibas (Colorado Springs, Colo.) got SMU on the board first vs. Bethel on Jan. 30, and Andy Roberts (Rochester, Minn.) netted a first-period tally vs. Lake Forest on Jan. 9. … Last Saturday's game vs. Augsburg was the last home game for SMU seniors Andy Roberts (Rochester, Minn.), Karl Reinke (Duluth, Minn.) and Karac Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.).

Johnnie Notes: With their win vs. SMU, the Johnnies have now won five of their last six games. … Saint John's loss to Hamline last Saturday snapped the Johnnies' four-game winning streak. … Hamline's four goals scored were the most allowed by the Johnnies since giving up five in a 5-1 loss at Gustavus on Jan. 31. … Jake Hipp leads the team in scoring, boasting team bests in goals (11) and points (20). He is one of seven SJU players with 10 or more points. … Pat Connelly is second on the team in goals with 10, while Clayton Rehm pushed his team-leading assist total to 14 with two helpers vs. the Cardinals. … Vince Wheeler has been the workhorse in goal for the Johnnies, starting 20 of the team's 24 games, while boasting a 2.89 goals-against-average and a .909 save percentage. … Twenty-five of SJU's 70 goals have come on the power play.
