WINONA, Minn. — After giving up five goals in their first meeting against St. Thomas Friday evening, the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team needed to make a defensive stand when the two teams squared off again Saturday at the SMU Ice Arena.
Which is exactly what they did, holding the high-scoring Tommies to just two goals in Saturday's rematch.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, two goals was just enough, as the Tommies' Jackie Carroll scored 6:15 into the third period to break a 1-1 tie and lift UST to a 2-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory.
“This was a tough loss to take,” said SMU coach
Terry Mannor, whose team was shut out by the Tommies 5-0 on Friday. “We played so well — we finally put together a complete, 60-minute effort, and, unfortunately, weren't rewarded for the effort.
“This team proved today what they are capable of when they play up to their potential every shift,” Mannor added. “It was a great college hockey game.”
After a scoreless first period, thanks in large part to the play of SMU goalie
Madeline Lenz (White Bear Lake, Minn.), who stopped all 12 UST shots, the Tommies finally broke through, as Kristine Beese beat Lenz with the game's only even-strength goal at 2:15 of the second period.
SMU, which outshot the Tommies 13-3 in the middle period, got the equalizer five minutes later, as
Jamie Henneman (Countryside, Ill.) netted her fourth of the season.
Carroll — who scored three of UST's five goals in Friday's win — then put the Tommies up for good at 6:35 of the third period, tallying an unassisted power play goal.
Lenz finished the day with 22 saves for the Cardinals, while UST goalie Lauren Bradel put together a 28-save effort for the Tommies.
“Hopefully this was a good learning experience for this team,” said Mannor. “We've got four (conference) games remaining, and we are still in the hunt (for one of the five spots in the MIAC Tournament), but we are going to need to come out and play like we did today if we are going to be successful.
“That's the type of effort we need every time we step on the ice.”
