Last Action:
The Cardinals came up short in both of its games against Augsburg last Friday. SMU failed to hold a sixth-inning lead in falling to the Auggies 7-5 in the eighth inning of their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at the HHH Metrodome, then came up one run short in losing the nightcap 6-5. … Gustavus, meanwhile, has been off since March 25, when the Gusties split their final two games in Chandler, Ariz., with a 7-6 loss and 20-2 win vs. Oberlin College. GAC's scheduled MIAC opener vs. Concordia last Saturday was postponed due to the flooding in Moorhead, Minn.

Last Meeting: It was almost as if SMU and GAC would never get their conference DH in a year ago, as the twinbill was postponed three times due to weather, then, after giving up five runs in the bottom of the fifth in falling to the Gusties 10-5, rain forced Game 2 to be postponed once again. When they did meet again, SMU got a 3-for-3, 2-RBI performance from Kyle Ryan (St. Paul, Minn.) in a 7-3 Cardinal win.

Saint Mary's Cardinal Notes: With their two losses to Augsburg, the Cardinals saw their losing streak climb to a season-high four straight. … Brandon Haugh (Easton, Minn.) enjoyed a stellar offensive afternoon vs. the Auggies, going 4-for-7 with six RBIs — including a 3-for-4, 4 RBI effort in Game 1. … Alex Schmidt (La Crosse, Wis.) belted his first home run of the season in Friday's Game 2 loss to Augsburg. … Ryan Archambault (Faribault, Minn.) drilled his first collegiate home run — a solo shot over the left-field fence — in last Thursday's Game 2 loss vs. Viterbo. … Zach Olberding (Maplewood, Minn.) and Curt Swenson (Woodbury, Minn.) lead the team in HRs with two each. Neither had a hit a collegiate home run before this season. … Kyle Ryan (St. Paul, Minn.) was held hitless in the second game vs. Augsburg, snapping the junior's season-high nine-game hitting streak. Olberding and Andrew Warren (Stillwater, Minn.), meanwhile, both hit safely in each game vs. Augsburg, extending their hitting streaks to nine in a row. … Ryan's 3-for-4 Game 1 performance was his team-leading sixth multiple-hit game of the season. … Last Thursday's games vs. Viterbo Thursday marked the first time since March 25, 2000 that the Cardinals hosted a nonconference game at Max Molock Field. SMU played its entire 2008 season on the road while “The Max” was renovated. … The Cardinals' two runs in Game 1 vs. the V-Hawks last Thursday marked the only time in the last seven games that SMU failed to score five or more runs. … The Cardinals' eight Game 2 runs vs. Viterbo were the second-most scored this season — SMU plated 11 in an 11-10 win over SUNY-New Paltz on March 15. … Those 11 runs vs. SUNY-New Paltz were the most since plating 15 in a 15-5 Game 2 win over Carleton on April 14, 2008. … SMU's 7-5, Game 2 win over Monmouth College on March 13 was not only the team's first win of the season, but it was also the first win for first-year head coach Nick Winecke. … Olberding leads the team in battingt average (.405), slugging percentage (.649) and on-base percentage (.463), while Ryan is second in average (.375) and boasts team-highs in at-bats 48), runs (7), hits (18), and stolen bases (9). … Olberding and Tyler Kruse (Minneapolis, Minn.) — who hit a bases-clearing three-run double in Game 2 vs. Viterbo — share the team lead with five extra-base hits. … More than half of SMU's 64 hits have been for extra bases, including 23 doubles, four triples and six home runs. … The Cardinals have stolen 20 bases on 25 attempts this season, while SMU catchers have thrown out 10 of 30 potential base stealers.

Gustavus Gustie Notes: The Gustie's 20-2 win over Oberlin snapped their three-game losing streak. … GAC's 20 runs vs. Oberlin were also a season high, and marked the fifth time this season the team has scored 10 or more runs in a game. On the flip side, Gustavus has allowed 10 or more runs eight times — including 15 in a 16-15 win vs. Luther and 12 in a 14-12, nine-inning triumph over Williams. … Alan Woitas leads the Gusties' offensive attack, boasting a team-high .441 batting average. He also leads the team in at-bats (59), runs (24), hits (26), triples (3), slugging percentage (.661), on-base percentage (.492) and stolen bases (7). … GAC has hit four home runs through 16 games, with Matt Morgan accounting for two of them. … Tory Herman leads the team in RBIs with 18, and is one of five GAC players with at least 10 RBIs. … The Gusties have five pitchers who have logged 10 or more innings, with Herman leading the way (14.0 IP). … Brandon Knoll has compiled a team-leading 2.53 ERA, while Herman is second at 3.86. … After playing their first 18 games on the road — including today's conference doubleheader vs. SMU — the Gusties open their home season Saturday, playing host to St. Olaf. Gustavus was 7-3 at home a year ago.
