WS GameDay at Gustavus

Wed., Sept. 30, 2009 / St. Peter, Minn. / 4 p.m.

ST. PETER, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's soccer team, coming off a streak-snapping 1-0 victory over St. Catherine at Ochrymowycz Field on Saturday, hit the road Wednesday, traveling to Gustavus for a 4 p.m. Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against the Gusties.

Records:
Saint Mary's Cardinals (1-2-1 MIAC / 5-2-1 Overall)
Gustavus Guties (1-2-0 MIAC / 5-3-0 Overall)

Last Action: Dana Winkler (Lake Geneva, Wis.) scored the game's only goal in the 81st minute, and the Cardinals made it stand up in beating St. Catherine 1-0 Saturday at Ochrymowycz Field. Gustavus, meanwhile, came up empty against Saint Benedict Saturday, falling to the Blazers 3-0 in St. Peter, Minn.

Last Meeting — Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008: Gustavus took advantage of three Cardinal miscues in their own box — turning all three into goals — as the Gusties collected their first conference win of the season, while keeping SMU winless in the MIAC, with a 3-0 victory at Winona Cotter Field.

SMU Cardinal Notes: SMU's 1-0 victory over St. Catherine Saturday was the Cardinals' first conference win of the season and snapped a 15-game MIAC winless streak (0-13-2), dating back to a 2-1 win over St. Thomas on Oct. 24, 2007. … The win was also Eric Zimmerman's first conference victory as the Cardinals' head coach. … Dana Winkler (Lake Geneva, Wis.) netted the lone goal Saturday, giving the SMU senior a career-high three goals this season. In fact, Winkler's three goals this season equal her goal total for her first three seasons as a Cardinal combined. … Amy Sibik (Onalaska, Wis.), who scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season in last Tuesday's heartbreaking 2-1 OT loss at Macalester, picked up her third assist of the season on Winkler's goal and now leads the team with 23 points. … Sibik's 10 goals are two shy of the career-high 12 goals she scored as a freshman, and give her 30 for her three-year career — ranking the SMU junior seventh all-time. … Sibik, who led the team in scoring in each of her first two seasons — and owns seven career multiple-goal games — is just three points shy of her career-best 26 points, recorded during the 2007 season. … Caitlyn Cole (Larsen, Wis.) holds the team lead in assists with five. … Mariana Sanchez (Puebla, Mexico), who stopped three shots in recording her fourth shutout of the season vs. St. Catherine Saturday, boasts a 0.63 goals-against-average and an .896 save percentage. Sanchez's four shutouts are a single-season career high and give the SMU senior 10 shutouts for her four-year career. … Last Tuesday's loss to Macalester was the Cardinals' second overtime game of the season. SMU is still looking for its first overtime win since a 1-0 win over St. Catherine on Sept. 13, 2007, going 0-2-3 in five OT games since then. … SMU has only allowed two goals in the first half this season — with both coming against Carleton on Sept. 22.

Gustavus Gusties Notes: After opening the season with five wins in their first six games, the Gusties have dropped their last two contests. … Saturday's loss to Saint Benedict was the Gusties' second straight shutout loss. … The Gusties have outscored their opponents 27-1 in their five wins, and have been outscored 5-0 in their three losses. … Nicole Kwapick leads the team in goals (5) and points (11), while Anna Jacobs, Karen Maus and Rachel Ibings share the team lead with two assists each. … Gustavus' 27 goals have come from 14 different players, while 11 Gusties have accounted for their 14 assists. … Chelsea Bayer has been the workhorse in goal for the Gusties, compiling a 0.53 goals-against-average and an .810 save percentage. She has stopped 17 of the 21 shots she's faced and has recorded three shutouts.
