WINONA, Minn. – On Friday,
Amy Sibik (Onalaska, Wis.) was good, as the Saint Mary's University junior scored once and added an assist in leading the Cardinal women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Simpson in the team's season opener.
On Saturday, Sibik was even better.
Check that – Sibik was great, scoring three times in leading SMU to its second win in as many days, a 4-2 nonconference victory over Central-Iowa.
“We played very well,” said SMU coach Eric Zimmerman. “Amy was unstoppable, but she wasn't the only one who played well – everyone did a great job.”
Sibik gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick early in the opening half, and Keirra Metcalfe (Pickering, Ontario) padded that lead to 2-0 before the half ended.
The second half belonged to Sibik, who scored back-to-back goals – the first assisted by Dana Winkler (Lake Geneva, Wis.), while the second was off an assist by Tania Trowbridge () – to push SMU's lead to 4-0.
The Dutch would net a pair of late goals, but it was too little, too late.
“It would have been nice to get the shutout, but we'll take the win,” said Zimmerman, whose team opens its home season on Tuesday, playing host to Crown in a 5 p.m. nonconference game at Ochrymowycz Field. “I'm excited about the way we are playing right now – it's a lot of fun to watch.”
