WINONA, Minn. - Playing for their MIAC playoff lives, the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team was hoping for a big win at home against the College of St. Benedict Saturday evening.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals the Blazers had other ideas as they used two second-half goals to top the Cardinals 2-1 at Ochrymowycz Field.

“We had about a 10-minute lapse defensively and they took advantage,” said SMU coach Eric Zimmerman, whose Cardinals fall to 4-4-1 in the MIAC with two games remaining in the regular season. “It digs us a deeper hole for the playoffs, but we still have a shot.”

The Cardinals were able to get on the board in the 63rd minute when Amy Sibik (Onalaska, Wis.) put her own rebound in the back of the net to cut the Blazers' lead to one.

That was all SMU could muster, however, as Saint Benedict hung on for the victory.

“It says a lot about the girls and the heart they have being able to come back from 2-0, but it was just too little too late,” Zimmerman said.
