MILWAUKEE, Wis. — With more than four inches of snow blanketing the landscape, winter has officially arrived in the Midwest. Unfortunately for Saint Mary's University men's hockey coach Bill Moore, the Cardinals offense appears to have gone into hibernation.

The Cardinals, who were shut out in a 2-0, nonconference loss to Milwaukee School of Engineering on Friday, managed just one goal on Saturday, as the 11th-ranked Raiders ran their season-opening winning streak to eight straight with a 7-1 win over SMU at the Kern Ice Center.

"It's not that we played that poorly, it's just that once (MSOE) got things going, we just couldn't stop them," said SMU coach Bill Moore. "Special teams was the difference — they scored three power-play goals and one shorthanded, and that really was the game."

Jordan Keizer, who scored both of the Raiders' goals in Friday's 2-0 victory over the Cardinals, gave MSOE an early 1-0 lead with his 11th of the season at 13:17 of the opening period.

The Cardinals wasted little time knotting things up, as Austin Balko (Midland, Mich.) scored his second of the season just eight seconds after Keizer's tally.

The Raiders then added their second power-play goal in as many chances, as Bradley Tierney banged a rebound past SMU goalie Jason Horstman (Faribault, Minn.) at the 17:53 mark to give MSOE a 2-1 lead after the game's opening 20 minutes.

MSOE pushed that lead to 4-1 with a pair of late second-period goals, and Keizer added his second and third of the game — and fourth and fifth of the weekend — as the Raiders completed the nonconference sweep.

Jason Horstman (Faribault, Minn.) finished with 34 saves for the Cardinals, while Connor Toomey kicked out 23 of the 24 SMU shots he faced — including all 12 in the second period, when the Cardinals held a 12-8 advantage in shots on goal.

SMU, which falls to 3-7 on the year, closes out the 2010 portion of its schedule on Friday, traveling to Fond du Lac, Wis., for a nonconference game against Marian.
