MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Friday night's have not been kind to the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team of late.
Two weeks ago, the Cardinals dropped a 2-1 decision to Bethel in the first game of SMU's two-game series against the Royals.
A week later, it was St. Thomas that handed SMU a Friday night loss, beating the Cardinals 2-1.
And Augsburg made it 3-for-3 Friday evening, as the Auggies raced out to a 4-0 and never looked back in handing the Cardinals a 4-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback.
“The final score really wasn't an indication of the game,” said SMU coach
Terry Mannor. “I thought we actually played pretty well, we just had some breakdowns that (Augsburg) cashed in on.”
Augsburg made the most of their offensive opportunities, scoring on four of its 18 shots, while Auggie goalie Toni Menth held SMU to just a third-period goal by
Cassie Stoner (Kenosha, Wis.), while stopping the other 40 Cardinal shots.
“We certainly had our share of chances,” said Mannor, whose team gets another shot at the Auggies Saturday, as SMU plays host to Augsburg in a 4 p.m. conference contest at the SMU Ice Arena. “I was happy with the way we created opportunities — now we have to figure out a way to convert on a few more of them."
