The Cardinals got a pair of complete-game pitching performances from Brett Ferschweiler (Rochester, Minn.) and Gary Seifert (Prescott, Wis.), but it was not enough, as SMU dropped a pair of nonconference games to Viterbo 4-2 and 3-2 in La Crosse, Wis., Thursday. St. Olaf, meanwhile, closed out its spring trip to Winter Haven, Fla., with a 9-5, nine-inning win over SUNY-Purchase on Wednesday.

Bret Ferschweiler (Rochester, Minn.) and Gary Seifert (Prescott, Wis.) each tossed complete games vs. Viterbo on Thursday — Ferschweiler allowed six hits and two earned runs in the 4-2 Game 1 loss, while Seifert scattered 11 hits and surrendered three earned runs in the 3-2 Game 2 loss. …  Neither pitcher issued a walk vs. Viterbo. … Curt Swanson (Woodbury, Minn.) and Joe O'Neil (St. Paul, Minn.) each had a hit in both games to account for four of SMU's eight hits vs. the V-Hawks. … With his two hits last Thursday, Swanson extended his hitting streak to a season- and career-high 10 straight. … With his two hits vs. Viterbo, O'Neil has now collected five hits in eight at-bats this season. … Swanson boasts a team-best .340 batting average, while also boasting team highs in hits (17), home runs (2), RBIs (16), total bases (28) and slugging percentage (.560). He raised his average from .190 to .377 over the stretch, which included a 5-for-6 game and two three-hit efforts... He leads the team in at bats (53), hits (20) and runs (13)... The Oles were without two of their best hitters — Carson Jones and Erik Nelson — for most of the trip... Nelson, the MIAC's Rookie of the Year in 2009, suffered an injury in the Metrodome in February and is expected to be back soon...
