GameDay Preview
WINONA, Minn. — For the second day in a row, the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team welcomed a nonconference opponent from Wisconsin to Ochrymowcyz Field, as the Cardinals played host to Lakeland Sunday afternoon.
And, for the second day in a row, the Cardinals made their visitor from the east feel anything but welcome.
Amanda Rahman (Rochester, Minn.) and
Amy Sibik (Onalaska, Wis.) each scored two goals — and the Cardinals erupted for five goals in the opening 18 minutes — as SMU rolled to its second straight 7-0 victory.
“We did a lot of nice things offensive tonight,” understated SMU coach Eric Zimmerman, whose team had posted an identical 7-0 victory — getting four goals from Sibik — on Saturday against Ripon. “We took control right from the beginning, and it was nice to see that we got contributions from a lot of different individuals.”
Mackenzie Carlson (Rosemount, Minn.) wasted no time getting the Cardinals on the board, as the freshmen netted her first collegiate goal in the game's third minute of play. Eleven minutes later, Sibik and Rahman then took over, each scoring twice in a span of less than five minutes, as the Cardinals pushed that lead to 5-0 with 26:27 still remaining in the opening half.
Caitlyn Cole (Larsen, Wis.) and
Katie Holmes (Edina, Minn.) rounded out the scoring with second-half tallies — Coles' second of the season and Holmes' her first as a Cardinal.
Cassie Hulett (Milwaukee, Wis.) picked up her second straight one-save shutout for the Cardinals, while Lakeland goalkeeper Ashley Sarbacker stopped 13 of the Cardinals' season-high 20 shots.
SMU (2-1-0 overall) is back in action on Wednesday, when they travel to La Crosse, Wis., for a 7 p.m. nonconference game against UW-La Crosse.
