NORTHFIELD, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team gave league-leading Carleton all it could handle Wednesday afternoon.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, they could not handle the Knights' Tim Wills, as the senior forward scored his second goal of the game with less than a minute remaining in the first overtime, lifting Carleton to a 2-1 victory at Bell Field.
"The guys came out today and competed hard - it's unfortunate that things ended the way they did," said SMU coach
Pete Watkins. "We created a lot of good chances to win the game in the second half, we just couldn't put the ball in the net.
"I'm proud of the way the guys played today."
The Knights broke a scoreless deadlock in the 53rd minute, as Wills knocked a cross by teammate Miles Silbert past SMU goalkeeper
Chris Williams (Chicago, Ill.). The Cardinals pulled even 16 minutes later, as
Jacob Bina (West Salem, Wis.) scored his team-leading third goal of the season off an assist by
Kameron McKeeth (Woodstock, Ga.).
The game would remained deadlocked until the 99th minute, when Wills would again find the back of the net to seal the victory.
Williams, making his 23rtd consecutive start over the past two seasons, finished with six saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Carleton goalkeeper James Neher made one save.
The Cardinals (1-6-1 MIAC, 2-9-1 overall) return to action on Friday, when they step out of conference play to host UW-Oshkosh in a 7 p.m. contest at Ochrymowycz Field.
