COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — Saint Mary's University men's soccer coach
Pete Watkins had seen his Cardinals write this script before — stumble into a deep, first-half hole, and not be able to dig themselves back out.
Saint John's scored two goals in 68 seconds less than 12 minutes into the opening half, and the Cardinals never recovered in falling to the Johnnies 3-0 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon.
Ian Scudder got the Johnnies on the board in the game's 10th minute, as his shot caromed off a Cardinal defender and past SMU goalkeeper
Chris Williams (Chicago, Ill.). Sam Hautman made it 2-0 68 seconds later, taking a corner kick from Andrew Johnson and beating Williams for his second goal of the season.
SJU's Joe Balder closed out the scored in the 77th minute, rifling a shot past SMU back-up goalkeeper
Joey Petrich (Elk River, Minn.).
Williams finished with six saves in the game's opening 45 minutes, with Petrich coming off after halftime, and stopping five of the six shots he faced in his first collegiate appearance of the season.
The Cardinals, who fall to 1-7-0 in the MIAC and 2-11-2 overall, return to action on Tuesday, hosting Macalester in a 3:30 p.m. conference game at Ochrymowycz Field.
