WAVERLY, Iowa — For
David Feather (Oak Creek, Wis.) and Katie Stolz (Forest Lake, Minn.), it was like stepping back in time to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships two week ago, as the duo once again led the way for the Cardinals Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Central Regional.
Feather, coming off a 22nd-place finish in his final MIAC Championships with an eight-kilometer time of 26:24, closed out his illustrious career Saturday with a team-best time of 26:55, leading the Cardinals to a 16th-place team finish.
Stolz, meanwhile, picked up right where she left off at his first conference championships, where she toured the 6K course in 24:53, as the SMU freshman stopped the clocked in a career-best 24:35 to fuel SMU's 23rd-place effort.
“It was a pretty decent day for us,” said SMU coach
Ward Berndt. “I think the guys were hoping to jump up a few (team) places, and the women had their sights set on getting past Augsburg, but couldn't quite get there, but overall, everyone ran pretty well.”
Aaron Haley (Plainview, Minn.) was clipping at Feather's heels, as the freshman was the second Cardinal across the finish line in 26:55, followed by
Jake Traxler (Le Center, Minn. / 27:14),
John Soucheray (Woodbury, Minn. / 27:22) and
Peter Borash (Bowlus, Minn. / 27:44).
On the women's side, Amy Spitzmueller (New Brighton, Minn.) was second to Stolz, posting a time of 25:29, with Jordan Junker (Glenwood City, Wis.) adding a time of 25:35. Katherine Mockler (Dubuque, Iowa / 26:12) and Beth Scott (Rochester, Minn. / 26:19) rounded out the Cardinals' top five.
Nebraska Wesleyan and St. Olaf earned the men's automatic berths to the NCAA National Championships with their 1-2 finish, as the Prairie Wolves took home the team title with 93 points, while the Oles were second at 107. Hamline (133), Loras (141) and Luther (161) rounded out the top five.
St. Thomas' Ben Sathre was the top individual, posting a time of 24:56 to beat out fellow MIAC rival Jack Deichert of Hamline, who was second in 25:18. Hamline's Ellis Richardson was third (25:19), followed by Coe's Kyle Heineman (25:21) and St. Olaf's Grant Wintheiser (25:25).
Host Wartburg ran away with the women's title with 63 points, well in front of runner-up Carleton (22:01). The two also earned the region's NCAA National Championship automatic berth. St. Olaf (93), Nebraska Wesleyan (96) and Luther (155) rounded out the top five teams.
