GameDay Preview
DULUTH, Minn. — There were plenty of firsts for the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team Friday evening against St. Scholastica.
SMU scored the game's first goal — their first power play tally of the season on the first goal as a Cardinal by
Nick Gorup (Omaha, Neb.)
The Cardinals also netted their first short-handed goal of the season — on
Danny Wood's (Wilmington, Ohio) first goal of the year.
Unfortunately, when the final horn sounded, there was still one first that eluded coach
Bill Moore and the Cardinals — their first win, as the Saints used a three-goal second period to hand SMU a 4-2 nonconference setback.
Gorup got the Cardinals on the board less than three minutes into the opening period, but St. Scholastica answered seven minutes later on a powerplay of its own to knot the game at 1-1 after the game's opening 20 minutes.
St. Scholastica would add two more goals in the first five minutes of the second period to build a 3-1 advantage, but Wood's short-handed tally off a picture-perfect pass from
Brad Fusaro (Soldotna, Alaska) pulled the Cardinals back within one, 3-2.
That, however, would be as close as SMU would get, as CSS's Brett Corcoran answered Wood's goal with his fourth of the season four minutes later to give the Saints a two-goal cushion heading into the final period.
Andy Scheib (Sun Prairie, Wis.) finished with 24 saves for the Cardinals, while Jojo Jeanetta kicked out 20 of SMU's 22 shots — including 13 in the first period.
The Cardinals (0-3-0 overall) are back in action on Saturday, traveling to Superior, Wis., for a 7 p.m. nonconference showdown with ninth-ranked UW-Superior.
