MESA, Ariz. — Saint Mary's University baseball coach Nick Winecke could not have asked for anything more from his Cardinals in general — and senior pitcher Chris Bogie (St. Paul, Minn.) in particular — in their spring-trip finale Saturday morning against Marian.

Bogie hurled a complete-game five-hitter and the Cardinals took advantage of a pair of Sabre errors in a three-run third inning, as SMU closed out its week-long spring trip with a 4-2 victory.

“I could not have asked for anything more than the guys gave me today,” said Winecke. “We were solid in all facets of the game — we fielded well, we swung the bats a bit and got some timely hits, and Bogie was unbelievable on the mound. He pitched outstanding.”

The Cardinals broke a scoreless tie in the third, as Paul LaNasa ((Mahtomedi, Minn.) reached on a error, stole second and, after a walk to Cody Pfennig (La Crosse, Wis.), scored on an RBI single by Vince Lulic (Mendota Heights, Minn.). Curt Swanson followed with an infield single that Marian shortstop threw high, allowing both Pfennig and Lulic to round the bases and score to push SMU's lead to 3-0.

SMU tacked on another run in the fifth, as LaNasa led off with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Lulic one-out single to center.

And four runs proved to be more than enough for Bogie, who held the Sabres scoreless through the first seven innings, before surrendering both Marian runs in the eighth. The senior left-hander scattered five hits and struck out six in posting his first collegiate nine-inning complete game.

“Our goal this week was to get better every day,” said Winecke, whose team is back in action on Saturday, traveling to Mount Vernon, Iowa, for a nonconference doubleheader against Cornell. “And there's no question, we are a better team today than we were when we got here.”
