GameDay Preview
SARTELL, Minn. — Mother Nature made things miserable for the Saint Mary's University men's golf team during Saturday's opening round of the Saint John's Invitational.
And Sunday, she made it even worse, adding constant rain to the wind and cold, and the Cardinals could not get their game on track, shooting a second-round 357 to finish 21st overall with a 713 total.
“It was tough conditions to play in,” said SMU assistant coach Ryan Egan. “Saturday, with the wind and the cold, was difficult, but today, when you add the rain, it was nuts.”
For the second day in a row,
Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals adding an 85 to his opening-round 79 for a 164 36-hole total.
Ethan Austin (Northbrook, Ill.) added a 95-87—182, followed by
Will Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn. / 92-91—183),
Bobby Glynn (Orland Park, Ill. / 90-94—184) and
Jason Horstman (Faribault, Minn. / 97-95—192).
The University of Manitoba held off a second-day charge by host Saint John's to win the team title with a 611 (306-305), one shot better than the Johnnies (317-295—612). Gustavus was third (322-295—617), with Concordia (313-309—622) and UW-Eau Claire (319-306—625) rounding out the top five.
Concordia's Pat Dietz won medalist honors, shooting a five-over-par 149 (72-77), one shot better than University of Manitoba's Bryce Barr (77-73—150) and two shots in front of SJU's Tony Krogen (77-74—151.
The Cardinals are right back in action next Saturday and Sunday, traveling to St. Paul, Minn., to take part in the Macalester Invitational.
