NORTHFIELD, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's golf team heads to the Northfield Country Club on Sunday, as the Cardinals square off against Carleton in a dual meet.

SMU kicked off its 2011 season on Thursday, falling to Macalester 325-349 in a dual meet at Mississippi National Golf Course in Red Wing, Minn.

The Cardinals and Knights squared off in a pair of unique dual meets a year ago.
September 4, 2010 — The two teams played 10, 18-hole match-play matches, with points being awarded for winning the Front 9, Back 9 and the entire 18 holes. The Knights dominated the competition, handing SMU a 26-4 setback.
April 30, 2011 — The Cardinals and Knights squared off in a Ryder Cup match at Cedar Valley Golf Course, with the Cardinals coming away with an 8 1/2 - 6 1/2 victory. The format was a modified Ryder Cup competition, with each team being subdivided into teams of two. Each twosome played six holes of best ball, six holes of alternate shot and six holes of best shot, with a point awarded for each of the three segments.

The Cardinals and Knights are both back in action on Sept. 10-11, when they travel to Majestic Oaks Golf Course in Ham Lake, Minn., for the 36-hole Augsburg Invitational.

Ethan Austin (Northbrook, Ill.) led the way for the Cardinals against Macalester Thursday, shooting an 82. … Ron Enrooth (New Prague, Minn.) chipped in an 87 and Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) added an 89 against Macalester, while D.J. Borgen (Red Wing, Minn.) and Will Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn.) rounded out the Cardinals' top five, shooting 91 and 92, respectively. … Sunday's match is the second and final dual meet of the season for the Cardinals, who will then take part in the Augsburg, Saint John's and Macalester Invitationals, before closing out their season at the three-day MIAC Championships on Oct. 1, 2 & 3 at Bunker Hills GC in Coon Rapids, Minn.
