WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team entered Wednesday evening's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference riding high — having won three straight for the first time since the 2001 season.
And when
Joe Bosco (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) scored just two minutes into the first half, the Cardinals appeared to be on their way to a fourth straight win.
Unfortunately for coach
Pete Watkins and the Cardinals, things aren't always as they appear.
Carleton would score three unanswered goals — one in the first half and two more in the second — as the 16th-ranked Knights handed SMU a streak-snapping 3-1 conference setback at Ochrymowycz Field.
“I thought we played a pretty good game,” said Watkins. “It was great to get that early goal, I think it kind of set the tone for the game.
“(Carleton) is a good team, but I thought we played every bit as well as they did.”
Bosco, who netted his first collegiate goal to account for all the scoring in SMU's 1-0 win over Hamline last Saturday, didn't waste any time netting collegiate goal No. 2, as the freshman dropped a shot over the outstretched arms of Carleton goalkeeper Keenan Smith and into the left-hand corner of the goal just 2:44 into the first half.
That, however, would be the only ball the Cardinals would get past Smith, who stopped the last seven Cardinal shots he faced in recording the win.
The Knights would pull even before halftime, as Simon Ginet recorded his sixth goal of the season, beating SMU goalkeeper
Christian Van Dam (Linovia, Mich.) with a header off a corner kick in the 21st minute.
Will Corcoran gave Carleton the lead for good 14 minutes into the second half as he netted his sixth of the season, whle Branden McGarrity pushed the Knights' advantage to 3-1 with his school record-tying 15th goal of the season with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.
The Cardinals (3-4-0 MIAC, 6-7-0 overall) are back in action on Sunday, when they step out of conference play for a 3:30 p.m. contest at Wisconsin Lutheran.
