WINONA, Minn.  — For the first 43 minutes Wednesday evening, the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team kept pace with Macalester.

Over the final 47 minutes, however, the Scots kicked things into high gear, and left the Cardinals in the dust.

Macalester broke a 0-0 tie with two minutes remaining in the first half, then erupted for four goals over the game's final 45 minutes in handing SMU a 5-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Ochrymowycz Field.

Izzi Speer got Macalester on the board in the 43rd minute, scoring her first goal of the season. Hannah Boston made it 2-0 five minutes into the second half, and Georgia Cloepfil made it 3-0 a minute later, beating SMU goalkeeper Miranda Halling (Rochester, Minn.) on a penalty kick.

The Cardinals finally broke through in the 59th minute, as Lia Irwin (Prescott, Ariz.) netted her first collegiate goal on a penalty kick to make it 3-1. That, however, would be as close as SMU would get, as Cloepfil would score her second of the game — and 13th of the season — in the 83rd minute and Rachel Locher would add her first of the year five minutes later to round out the scoring.

The Cardinals close out the season on Saturday, traveling to Minneapolis, Minn., for a 3 p.m. MIAC game against Augsburg.
