GameDay Preview
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — When the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team scored goals, they scored them in bunches, netting 13 goals in their seven wins this season — including a pair of goals in Tuesday's 2-0, streak-snapping win over Macalester.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, goals didn't come in bunches in their season finale against Augsburg.
In fact, goals didn't come at all, as the Auggies scored single goals in each half in handing SMU a 2-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at Edor Nelson Field.
Augsburg got on the board first, as the Auggies' Josh Sweeney corralled a loose ball off a free kick from Scott Clinton and rifled a shot past SMU goalkeeper Dontae Gillespie (Naperville, Ill.) in the game's 19th minute.
Clinton and Sweeney were at it again early in the second half — switching roles in a Sweeney-to-Clinton combination that gave Augsburg a 2-0 advantage in the game's 56th minute.
Gillespie finished with three saves in the first half, while
Joey Petrich (Elk River, Minn.) came on in relief, posting two saves in the game's final 45 minutes.
The Cardinals close out their second season under head coach
Pete Watkins with a 4-6-0 mark in MIAC playing, while going 7-10-1 overall. SMU's seven wins are the most wins by the Cardinals since 2002, when they finished 8-8-1. Their four conference wins, meanwhile, are the most since 2005, when the Cardinals went 5-5-0.
