GameDay Preview
ST. PAUL, Minn. — All season long,
Aaron Haley (Plainview, Minn.),
Jake Traxler (Le Center, Minn.) and
Peter Borash (Bowlus, Minn.) have been the leaders of the Saint Mary's University men's cross country team.
And Saturday was no different.
The trio were not only the Cardinals' best, but they were also among the best in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, as Haley earned First-Team All-MIAC honors, while Traxler and Borash were both honorable-mention picks after their performances at the MIAC Championships Saturday at Como Park Golf Course.
Haley, who set the school's eight-kilometer record with a time of 26:00 at the Jim Drews Invitational two weeks ago, narrowly missed rewriting the record books again, clocking a time of 26:03 to finish 13th overall, while Traxler and Borash were close behind, stopping the clock in 26:18 and 26:21 to place 17th and 18th, respectively.
As a team, the Cardinals finished seventh in the 11-team field with 146 points. St. Olaf captured the team title, easily outdistancing runner-up St. Thomas, while Bethel, Saint John's and Hamline rounded out the top five.
"Everyone had a great day," said SMU coach
Ward Berndt. "To have three guys in the top 20 is awesome — could not have asked for anything more out of them.
"And on the women's side, just about everyone ran a PR — which is exactly what you are hoping for at this stage in the season," Berndt added. "Overall, it was a very solid day."
St. Olaf's Grant Wintheiser was the men's individual champion, as the sophomore recorded an 8K time of 25:08, 21 seconds faster than runner-up Micheale Tesema of Augsburg.
Katie Stolz (Forest Lake, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinal women, as the sophomore placed 41st overall with a six-kilometer time of 23:57.
Gustavus took home the women's team title, edging St. Olaf by three points and third-place Carleton by 11. St. Thomas and Saint Benedict rounded out the top five.
Taylor Berg of St. Thomas was the women's individual champion, touring the 6K course in 21:39. St. Olaf's Jorden Johnson and Emma Lee finished second and third , posting times of 21:54 and 22:01, respectively.
Along with the efforts of Haley, Traxler and Borash, the Cardinals also got a 32nd-place showing from
John Soucheray (Woodbury, Minn.), who stopped the clock in 26:52, while
Jase Pater (Adrian, Minn. / 62nd, 27:35),
Gabe Thiel (Berlin, Wis. / 66th, 27:43) and
Colin Sheehan (Austin, Minn. / 67th, 28:00) rounded out SMU's top seven.
On the women's side, Katherine Mockler (Dubuque, Iowa) was the second Cardinal across the finish line, stopping the clock in 24:50, followed by Kristen Thelen (Rochester, Minn. / 25:00), Shauna Stephens (Norwood, Minn. / 25:25), Amy Spitzmueller (New Brighton, Minn. / 25:28), Allie Thiel (Burr Ridge, Ill. / 25:38) and Beth Scott (Rochester, Minn. / 25:49).
The Cardinals are now off until Nov. 10, when they travel to Northfield, Minn., for the NCAA Division III Central Regional, hosted by St. Olaf.
