ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's soccer team put an end to a five-half scoreless drought Saturday afternoon, getting a second-half tally from
Bethany Schmidt (Sparta, Wis.) in the Cardinals' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Hamline.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, one goal would not be enough, as Hamline scored twice in the game's final 45 minutes — including the game-winner with 12 minutes remaining in regulation — to hand SMU a 2-1 conference setback.
After a scoreless first half — in which the swarming Piper defense held the Cardinals without a shot, while SMU goalkeeper
Miranda Halling (Rochester, Minn.) stopped all three HU shots she faced — the Pipers' Heather Hollinger broke the defensive stalemate 14 minutes into the second stanza.
SMU got the equalizer in the game's 76th minute, as Schmidt netted her second of the season — moving her into a tie with
Sloane Kuramoto (Rochester, Minn.) for the team lead.
The deadlock was short-lived, however, as Alyssa Koulentis beat Halling less than a minute after Schmidt's goal to give the Pipers the lead for good.
Halling, who has played every minute of the Cardinals' first 12 games in goal and entered Saturday's game as the MIAC leader in saves, stopped six of the eight HU shots she faced.
The Cardinals are right back in conference action on Wednesday, traveling to Northfield, Minn., for a 4 p.m. game against Carleton.
