GameDay Preview
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University and UW-Oshkosh baseball teams were scheduled to play a pair of seven-inning nonconference games Sunday evening at the Metrodome.
The teams played 14 innings all right — in the first game alone.
Andy Edholm (Hudson, Wis.) delivered a two-out, infield single in the bottom of the 14th inning to score
Matt Tessmer (West St. Paul, Minn.) from third with the game's only run, lifting the Cardinals to a 1-0 victory over the Titans in SMU's longest game since beating Christian Brothers University 6-5 in 14 innings during the 1999 season.
Paul LaNasa (Mahtomedi, Minn.) went 4-for-6 to fuel the Cardinals' 14-hit attack, while UW-Oshkosh's Derek Leyton also had a four-hit evening.
Starter
Teddy VanRanst (St. Paul, Minn.) went the first six innings for the Cardinals, holding the Titans to seven hits.
Justin Kronebusch (Altura, Minn.) scattered four hits in six innings of work, while
Tyler Krysiak (Bloomington, Minn.) — the team's saves leader with three — picked up his first collegiate pitching win, allowing two hits and striking out three in the final two innings.
The Cardinals threatened in the bottom of the third, as LaNasa led off with a single, and, one out later, stole second.
Vince Lulic (Mendota Heights, Minn.) followed with a single to center, but LaNasa was thrown out trying to score from second.
It was the Titans' turn to threaten in the fourth, as Tyler Kamps opened with a double and was sacrificed to third on a bunt by Zachary Peterson. Trey Demler lifted a fly to left that Lulic fielded and gunned a perfect strike to catcher
Curt Swanson (Woodbury, Minn.) to throw out Kamps at the plate and keep the game scoreless.
The Cardinals would have at least one base-runner in eight of the final 10 innings, but it wasn't until the bottom of the 14th that they were able to plate the game's only run.
LaNasa led off the inning with a single to right, but was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice groundout by Tessmer. Tessmer then stole second, moved to third on a fly out to right by Lulic and scored on Edholm's infield single.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 8-5 overall. They are back in action — and back in the Dome — on Tuesday, squaring off in a nonconference doubleheader against Luther. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
