MESA, Ariz. — The Saint Mary's University baseball team flexed its muscles a bit Tuesday, erupting for nine runs in the Cardinals' nine-inning nonconference game against Concordia-Chicago.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, nine runs was one too few, as the Cougars scored in six of the game's nine innings — including a walk-off, RBI single by Robert Weis in the bottom of the ninth inning — in handing SMU a 10-9 setback.
After spotting Concordia a 1-0 lead after the first inning, the Cardinals' bats came to life, as Matt Feriancek (River Falls, Wis.) and
Vince Lulic (Mendota Heights, Minn.) collected RBI singles on balls that never left the infield, and
Kevin Gannon (Roselle, Ill.) followed with a bases-clearing, three-run double to give SMU a 5-1 advantage.
The Cougars whittled away at SMU's lead, scoring once in the bottom of the second, before using a three-run fifth tie things up at 5-5. Concordia would add two more runs in both the sixth and eighth innings, before the Cardinals' bats returned to their second-inning form in the top of the ninth.
Lulic opened the ninth with a walk and Gannon followed with an infield single.
Curt Swanson (Woodbury, Minn.) delivered an RBI single to cut the gap to 9-6, and, two outs later,
Danny Geraghty (Chicago, Ill.) laced a single through the right side to plate another SMU run.
Andy Edholm (Hudson, Wis.) then came up with the biggest hit of the inning, a two-run, pinch-hit triple down the right-field line to tie the game at 9-9.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Cougars' Anthony Even greeted relief pitcher
Tyler Krysiak (Bloomington, Minn.) — who had picked up saves in two of SMU's first three wins of the season — with a lead-off double. After a pair of intentional walks loaded the bases, Weis delivered the game-winning single up the middle.
Jon Schlemmer (De Pere, Wis.) led the Cardinals' 13-hit offensive attack, going 3-for-5, while Geraghty and Gannon each had two hits. Gannon also drove in three runs, while Edholm had a pair of RBIs in his pinch-hit appearance.
The Cardinals (3-2 overall) are now of until Thursday, when they square off against Simpson in a nonconference doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. (CST).
