The Cardinals dropped both ends of their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference-opening doubleheader against Bethel Saturday, falling 4-3 in Game 1 and 12-2 in Game 2. … UW-Stout, meanwhile, dropped three of four games in their two conference doubleheaders against UW-Stevens Point Saturday and Sunday in Menomonie, Wis. The Blue Devils lost 10-6 and won 5-3 on Saturday, but the Pointers had the upper hand on Sunday, winning 14-8 and 18-5.

SMU vs. UW-Stout — Their Last Meeting:
April 29, 2011: Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh, the Cardinals got a game-tying run on a Vince Lulic (Mendota Heights, Minn.) single, before Andrew Warren (Stillwater, Minn.) delivered the most important of SMU's 11 hits, belting a two-out solo home run to left, lifting SMU to a 6-5 nonconference win over UW-Stout in the opening game of their doubleheader at Max Molock Field. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, there were not late-inning heroics in the nightcap, as UW-Stout erupted for five runs in the second inning and never looked back, earning a split with a 9-2 win.

The Cardinals continue their mid-season swing through Wisconsin on Thursday, traveling to La Crosse, Wis., for a 2:30 p.m. nonconference doubleheader against Viterbo. … UW-Stout, meanwhile, hits the road on Thursday and Friday, heading to Platteville, Wis., for a pair of WIAC doubleheaders against UW-Platteville.

After playing their first two home games on Saturday against Bethel, the Cardinals play three road doubleheaders this week — Tuesday at UW-Stout, Thursday at Viterbo and Saturday at St. Thomas. When SMU returns home on April 10 to face Concordia, the Cardinals will have played 21 of their first 23 games on the road. … After winning at least one game in their first five doubleheaders of the season, the Cardinals have been swept in their last two — falling 2-1, 6-5 vs. Augsburg on March 31 and losing to Bethel 4-3, 12-2 on Saturday. … SMU's 4-3 Game 1 loss to Bethel Saturday marked the seventh one-run loss among the Cardinals' nine setbacks this season. … Zach Wolfe (Wabasha, Minn.) went 2-for-3 to pace SMU's nine-hit Game 1 attack vs. Bethel. UW-Stout has 12 newcomers on this year's roster — including head coah Toby Gardenhire, the son of Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire. Toby Gardenhire, drafted by the Twins in both 2002 and 2005, played in the Twins minor league organization for seven years. … The Blue Devils have another Minnesota Twins connection, as outfielder Brett Vavra is the nephew of Joe Vavra, the Twins hitting coach. … UW-Stout opened the season 7-3, their best start since the 2009 season. … UW-Stout enters Tuesday's nonconference doubleheader against Saint Mary's having lost two of their last three and three of their last four. … UW-Stout's 14-8, 18-5 losses to UW-Stevens Point Sunday marked the first time this season the Blue Devils have been swept in a doubleheader.
