GameDay Preview
SARTELL, Minn. —
Blake Westerberg (Red Wing, Minn.) got off to a slow start in his opening 18 holes at the Saint John's Invitational on Saturday, shooting a front-nine 44, before rebounding with a three-over-par 39 on the back nine.
And as good as Westerberg was on the back nine Saturday, he was even better on Sunday.
After another slow start — this time a six-over 42 — Westerberg carded his best collegiate nine-hole score, touring the back nine at Blackberry Ridge Golf Course in three-under 33 en route to a second-day 75.
Fueled by Westerberg's 83-75—158, the Cardinals shaved 10 strokes off their Day 1 score, shooting a 336 Sunday to finish 20th overall.
The University of Manitoba followed up its opening-day 298 with a 292 on Sunday en route to a two-stroke victory over Nebraska Wesleyan for the team title. Gustavus (298-301—599) and Saint John's (300-299—599) tied for third, while ST. Olaf (313-299—612) rounded out the top five.
Bryce Barr of the University of Manitoba and UW-Stout's Josh Grisa shared medalist honors with one-under 143 totals, while Andrew Oaks of Gustavus and Drew Taylor of Nebraska Wesleyan were tied for third with one-over 145s.
Ethan Austin (Northbrook, Ill.) chipped in an 85 for the Cardinals on Sunday to finish at 172 (87-85), followed by
Will Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn. / 87-86—173),
Trevor Erickson (Sparta, Wis. / 93-90—183) and
Eric Zimmerman (Minneapolis, Minn. / 89-96—185).
The Cardinals are now off until Oct. 6-7-8, when they take part in the season-ending Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids, Minn.
