WINONA, Minn. — Mother Nature certainly did her part to make Saturday's afternoon's showdown between the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team and Concordia enjoyable, as the two teams squared off under clear blue skies and temperatures hovering in the low 70s.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the Cobbers weren't as accommodating, as Concordia scored three goals in a 10-minute span late in the first half and cruised to a 4-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory at Ochrymowycz Field.
The Cardinals held the high-powered Cobber offense at bay for the first 30 minutes of the opening half, but Elizabeth Robinson broke the scoreless battle with her first goal of the season in the 32nd minute.
Six minutes later, Robinson was at it again, this time feeding Gina Weiss, whose shot eluded the outstretched arms of SMU goalkeeper
Miranda Halling (Rochester, Minn.) to give CC a 2-0 advantage.
And Robinson wasn't finished, as she netted her second of the game 10 minutes after her first on an assist by Sarah Rounds to push the Cobbers' lead to 3-0 heading into the halftime break.
The SMU defense clamped down on Robinson and Co. for the majority of the second half, but Marta Prosinski managed to push CC's lead to 4-0, banging home a rebound off a Sadie Hayes shot in the 87th minute.
Halling finished with a career-high 16 saves — including nine in the second half — while Cobber goalkeeper Ali Nelson stopped all three of SMU's shots to record the shutout.
The Cardinals (0-5-0 MIAC, 0-10-0 overall) are back in action on Wednesday, traveling to Stevens Point, Wis., for a 4:30 p.m. nonconference game against UW-Stevens Point.
