18 Cardinals earn MIAC academic honors

WINONA, Minn. — Eighteen Saint Mary's University fall student-athletes earned Academic All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference recognition, it was announced Thursday.

The MIAC recognized a record 327 student-athletes who represented the conference's 13 institutions. The MIAC's previous fall record was 305, set in 2009 and 2010.

Student-athletes must be a sophomore, junior, or senior with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale to qualify for MIAC Academic All-Conference recognition. Athletically, student-athletes in football, soccer, and volleyball must compete in 50% of their team's varsity regular season contests. Golfers must be a member of their competing team at the conference championship and cross country runners must finish in the top 50 at the conference championship or be in the top seven of their team at the MIAC Championships.

The SMU men's cross country team led the way, boasting five athletes on the Academic All-MIAC Team, while the Cardinal women's cross country, women's soccer and volleyball teams all landed four athletes.

Peter Borash (Bowlus, Minn.), John Soucheray (Woodbury, Minn.), Jake Traxler (Le Center, Minn.), Gabe Thiel (Berlin, Wis.) and Aaron Haley (Plainview, Minn.) represented the SMU men's cross country team, while Cardinal women's cross country members Beth Scott (Rochester, Minn.), Amy Spitzmueller (New Brighton, Minn.), Kristen Thelen (Rochester, Minn.) and Katie Stolz (Forest Lake, Minn.) also earned academic honors.

Sloane Kuramoto (Rochester, Minn.), Heidi Martin (Ankeny, Iowa), Melissa Radermacher (Plymouth, Minn.) and Bethany Schmidt (Sparta, Wis.) represented the women's soccer team, while Cardinal volleyball players Kaylee Bunne (LeRoy, Minn.), Megan Leisen (Wabasha, Wis.), Cathy Rennie (Pine Island, Minn.), and Molly Grover (Zumbrota, Minn.), and men's golfer Trevor Erickson (Sparta, Wis.) also make the cut.
