GameDay Preview
WINONA, Minn. — Overtimes have not been kind to the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team this season.
For the second time in the last week — for the second time in consecutive Saturdays to be exact — the Cardinals found themselves deadlocked after the game's 90 minutes of regulation play.
Unfortunately, Saturday's OT against Bethel ended in the same fashion as last Saturday's against St. Catherine — in heartbreak.
Bethel's Jessica Huseby scored the only goal of the game off a free kick in the 98th minute to lift the Royals to a 1-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over the Cardinals at Ochrymowycz Field.
"It's tough," said SMU coach
Neil Cassidy, whose team surrendered the game-tying goal with five minutes remaining in regulation and the game-winning goal five minutes into overtime in its heartbreaking 2-1 loss to St. Catherine last Saturday. "The ladies played their hearts out today, and for the game to end on a (questionable call) like that, it's a tough pill to swallow."
SMU goalkeeper
Miranda Halling (Rochester, Minn.) and Bethel's Micale Jensen were perfect through the game's opening 90 minutes, as Jensen stopped all three Cardinal shots she faced, while Halling recorded eight saves.
Halling then made her biggest save of the day — diving to her right to swat away a shot by Huseby four minutes into the overtime period.
The Bethel junior, however, got the better of Halling three minutes later, feathering a shot into the upper left-hand corner on a free kick from just outside the box for the game's only goal.
The Cardinals step out of conference play for the final time on Wednesday, traveling to La Crosse, Wis., for a 6 p.m. contest against UW-La Crosse.
