ST. PETER, Minn. — A year ago, Gustavus' Amanda Cartony proved to be the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team's worst nightmare, scoring both Gustie goals in a 2-1 victory over the Cardinals at SMU's Ochrymowycz Field.
Wednesday afternoon, Cartony was at it again — but this time, she had some help.
Cartony scored one of the Gusties' three goals, as Gustavus handed Saint Mary's a 3-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at the Gustie Soccer Field.
The Gusties didn't waste any time getting on the board, as Maddison Ackiss took a feed from Heather Goff and beat SMU goalkeeper
Aubrie Cornell (Holts Summit, Mo.) in the game's seventh minute.
GAC maintained that 1-0 advantage until just before halftime, when Monica Pelkey beat Cornell in the 40th minute to give Gustavus a two-goal cushion heading into the break.
Three minutes into the second half, it was Cartony's turn, as the GAC senior scored her fifth of the season — and third against the Cardinals in the last two years — to give the Gusties a commanding 3-0 advantage.
Kelli Harstad (Hampton, Minn.) got the Cardinals on the scoreboard with less than five minutes remaining in regulation, as the freshman netted her first collegiate goal off an assist from
Megan Nitzsche (St. Francis, Wis.).
Cornell collected a career-high seven saves in goal for the Cardinals, who return to action on Saturday, as SMU travels to Fargo Shanley High School in Fargo, N.D., for a 3 p.m. conference matchup with Concordia.
