Augsburg Auggies News and Notes:
The Auggies are coming off a sixth-place finish in the conference standings a year ago. … The Auggies closed out the 2012-13 season going 5-3-2 in their last 10 games. … Augsburg returns First-Team All-MIAC selections Ben McClellan and Chris Student. … McClellan led the Auggies in goals (11) — including three power-play, two shorthanded and one game-winner — and points (19) last season, while sharing the team lead in assists (8) with Mack Ohnsted. … McClellan had three multi-goal games, including a two-goal, three-assist night in an 8-2 win at Wisconsin-Superior on Dec. 7. He had a goal or assist in 11 of the Auggies' 25 games. … Led by McClellan, the Auggies return their top four scorers from a year ago. … Augsburg's 64 goals last season came from 18 different players. … Augsburg will be without the services of graduated senior Jason Lochner, who started 22 of the team's 25 games in goal, posting a 3.07 GAA and an .895 save percentage. Lochner appeared in 88 contests in his Augsburg career, winning 36 games and recording two shutouts, with a .911 career save percentage and 2.80 career GAA. … Augsburg scored a season-high nine goals in a 9-4 win over Bethel on Feb. 8, and netted seven or more goals three times a year ago. … Augsburg scored first in seven of its eight wins last season, going just 1-11-1 when its opponent netted the game's first goal.
Bethel Royals News and Notes:
The Royals are coming off an eighth-place finish in the 2012-13 conference standings. … A pair of Royals made history last season, as Jack Paul and Mitch Hughes finished the year with an MIAC-leading 26 points. It was the first time in Bethel's history that the Royals had any individual lead the conference in scoring. … Speaking of history, Paul and Jon Crouse also accomplished the rare feat of being named to the All-MIAC Team for the fourth consecutive season. … The Royals also had two freshmen named to the MIAC All-Freshman squad (Hughes and Tony Larson) a year ago. … Bethel returns six of its top seven scorers. … Hughes closed out his freshman season with a team-leading 15 goals, while Paul led the squad in assists with 18. … Eight of Hughes' 15 goals came on the powerplay. … Hughes scored at least one point in 11 straight games last season (12 goals, 6 assists, 18 points). … Five of Bethel's seven wins came when the Royals scored the game's first goal. BU was just 2-10-0 when its opponent scored first. … BU was the only team in the MIAC not to play an OT game a year ago.
Concordia Cobbers News and Notes:
The Cobbers are coming off a third-place finish in the conference standings a year ago. … Concordia's 10 MIAC wins a year ago were the most since the 2000-01 season. The Cobbers also made the semifinals of the conference postseason tournament for the second time in the past three seasons, falling to Saint John's 5-1. … Caleb Suderman earned All-MIAC honors for the third straight season, finishing third in the conference in scoring among defensemen with seven goals, seven assists and 14 points. … Jordie Bancroft — CC's other First-Team All-MIAC selection — led the team in scoring with 12 goals goals, 10 assists and 22 points in his freshman campaign. … Chris Neamonitis returns after his second straight honorable-mention All-MIAC performance a year ago, when the Cobber netminder appeared in 24 of the team's 26 games, compiling a 2.34 GAA and a .927 save percentage. … Concordia closed out the 2012-13 season with wins in five of its final six games, while also going 8-4 in its final 12. … CC played five overtime games a year ago, going 3-1-1. … The Cobbers scored a season-high six goals in a 6-2 win over Augsburg on Jan. 12, while netting five goals in a game four times.
Gustavus Gusties News and Notes:
The Gusties finished fourth in the MIAC?regular-season standings, but reached the MIAC Tournament title game for the second straight year — and fourth time in the last five seasons — falling to Saint John's 3-2. … GAC?has reached the MIAC post-season tournament in each of the last 12 seasons and 22 times since the tournament began in 1986-87. …
After going just 5-5-1 in its first 11 games, Gustavus went 12-3-2 over its final 17 contests — including a season-high eight-game winning streak that propeled the Gusties into the conference tournament title game. … Adam Smyth returns after an All-MIAC season a year ago, in which he led the team in scoring 21 points (12 G, 9 A). … Smyth recorded a pair of hat tricks last season, scoring three goals against both Lawrence and Concordia. … Jack Walsh returns after scoring a team-best 13 goals — one more than Smyth — while Andy Pearson led the Gusties with 12 assists. … GAC returns four of its top five scorers. … Gustavus heads into the 2013-14 season without the services of graduated senior Tyler Venne, who appeared in 21 of the team's 28 games in goal, posting a 2.25 GAA and a .917 save percentage. … Gustavus outscored its opponents 26-12 in the game's opening 20 minutes. … GAC scored first in 17 of its 28 games, going 14-2-1 when netting the game's opening goal.
Hamline Pipers News and Notes:
The Pipers are coming off a ninth-place finish in the conference standings in the first season under coach Doc DelCastillo a year ago. … The Pipers return all of their offensive punch from a year ago, including All-MIAC selection Joe Rubbelke and MIAC All-Rookie selection Brandon Zurn. … Rubbelke was also named to the d3hockey.com West Region Second Team. … Rubbelke closed out his sophomore campaign as the team-leader in assists (14) and points (21), while finishing second in goals with seven, one shy of Zurn's team-leading eight. … Rubbelke's 21 points were tops among MIAC defensemen, while his 13 power play points (4 G, 9 A) also led the league. … HU's 45 goals a year ago came from 15 different players, while 21 Pipers recorded at least one point. … The Pipers played six overtime games a year ago, going 1-0-5 — with the victory a 1-0 shutout over regular-season champion St. Thomas. … HU scored a season-high five goals in a 5-5 tie vs. Concordia during last season's MIAC Hockey Showcase, while netting four goals three times. … The Pipers scored the game's first goal eight times last season.
Saint John's Johnnies News and Notes:
The Johnnies are coming off a 16-8-4 season a year ago in which they shared the MIAC regular-season title with St. Thomas, while also capturing the league's post-season tournament title with a 3-2 victory over Gustavus. … SJU captured its first MIAC playoff title since 2003 and its first NCAA tournamnet appeaance since 2005. The Johnnies fell to eventual national champion UW-Eau Claire 3-2 in the NCAA tourney. … SJU heads into the 2013-14 season with All-American Saxton Soley back between the pipes. Soley became the first known freshman to be named the MIAC Player of the Year last season, compiling a 15-5-1 record, 1.81 GAA and a .928 save percentage. … Soley is one of eight SJU players returning who received All-MIAC honors a year ago. Justin Hochsprung, John Haeg and Phil Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) were also first-team selections, while four SJU defensemen were named honorable mention. … Haeg finished as the team-leader in assists (19) and points (30) last season, while Johnson scored a team-best 12 goals. … SJU boasted 10 players with 10 or more points last season, including Haeg with 30 and three others — Hochsprung (24), Johnson (21) and Pettit (20) with 20 or more.
Saint Mary's Cardinals News and Notes:
The Cardinals closed out the season with eight wins, the most since the Cardinals went 9-14-2 during the 2007-08 season. … Mike Hill closed out the season as the Cardinals' team-leader in all three offensive categories, finishing with 12 goals, 12 assists and 24 points. … Hill's 12 goals are the most since Kevin Wentland netted 12 goals in 2010-11, while his 12 assists equalled Austin Balko's 12-assist showing from a year ago. … Hill's 24 points, meanwhile, are the most since Anthony Bohn tallied 31 points during his senior season in 2009-10. … Bobby Thompson finished second on the team in all three offensive categories with 10 goals, 11 assists and 21 points — all three were career highs. … The Cardinals posted 10 multiple-goal games last season, led by Hill with four and Balko with two. … SMU boasted seven players with 10 or more points a year ago. … SMU's 67 goals came from 16 different players, while 21 Cardinals have recorded at least one point. … The Cardinals netted seven shorthanded goals a year ago, tying the school record set during the 1991-92 season. … The Cardinals' season-ending, 4-3 loss to Concordia was its third overtime game of the season, with SMU going 1-1-1. … SMU's 0-0 tie vs. St. Thomas on Jan. 18 marked the first time in program history the Cardinals played to a scoreless tie.
St. Olaf Oles News and Notes:
The Oles are coming off a 10-14-2 season a year ago that included a 9-7-0 showing in the MIAC — good for fifth place and a berth in the conference's post-season tournament. … The Oles will be without a pair of First-Team All-MIAC selections in brothers Jeff and Kevin Harris. Jeff Harris, who shared the MIAC Player of the Year honor with SJU's Saxton Soley, was also named Second-Team All-American following his senior season last year. … Jeff Harris, the Oles' first MIAC Player of the Year since Dylan Mueller in 2008-09, led the MIAC with 12 goals and 18 points. … In St. Olaf's 26 games last season, Jeff Harris finished with a team-best 16 goals, while also compiling a team-high 24 ponts. … Kevin Harris was the team's assist leader with 14. … The Oles boasted six players with 10 or more points, including three — Jeff Harris (24), Dan Cecka (22) and Kevin Harris (20) — with 20 or more. … Henrik Wood and Steve Papciak shared the goalie detail a year ago, with Wood compiling a 2.34 GAA and a .924 save percentage in 16 games, while Papciak owned a 3.09 GAA?and an .898 save percentage in 10 appearances. … St. Olaf scored first in nine of its 10 wins — going 9-4-1 when scoring first, and 1-10-1 when its opponent tallied the game's first goal.
St. Thomas Tommies News and Notes:
The Tommies are coming off a 13-11-2 overall record a year ago, including a share of the MIAC regular-season title with Saint John's. … UST posted the program's 31st consecutive winning season and earned its 29th MIAC regular-season title last season, while making it 29-for-29 in conference playoff berths. … The Tommies, who allowed just 25 goals in 16 MIAC regular-season games — the fewest by any team in the last nine years in conference play — return five All-MIAC First-Teamers and an All-American from last year's squad. Drew Fielding, Alex Altenbernd, Tyler Grubb, Michael Krieg and Jeremy Hepler were all on the All-MIAC First-Team, while Krieg also garnered Second-Team All-American honors. … UST must replace Riley Horgan and his team-leading 14 assists and 19 points, but the Tommies do return Altenbernd and Krieg, who combined for 14 goals, 17 assists and 31 points. … Fielding is back between the pipes for UST, after posting a 1.69 GAA and a .929 save percentage in 21 games last year. … UST boasted a school-record seven shutouts last season — including a 0-0 tie vs. Saint Mary's, the Tommies' first scoreless tie in more than 70 seasons. |
