GameDay Preview
COON RAPIDS, Minn. —
Blake Westerberg (Red Wing, Minn.) and
Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) were the team-leaders for the Saint Mary's University men's golf team all season.
So it was no surprise that the Cardinal duo were leading the way for SMU during the opening round of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships Saturday at Bunker Hills Golf Course.
Westerberg fired the Cardinals' low round of the day, as the sophomore toured the par-72 layout in five-over 77. Wolford and
Connor Brandt (Woodbury, Minn.) each chipped in eight-over 80s, and
Trevor Erickson (Sparta, Wis.) and
Alex Kren (Neillsville, Wis.) each finished with 87s.
Saint John's fired a one-under team score of 287 to build an 11-stroke lead after the first day of the 54-hole tournament, with Bethel and Concordia sharing second at 298, followed by Augsburg (300) and St. Thomas (303).
The Johnnies also owned the top two individual performances, as Casey Vangsness carded a five-under 67 and Brett Draxler followed with a three-under 69. Landon Poss of Concordia also finished Day 1 under par with a one-under 71, with Brandon Jones sitting in fourth at even-par 72.
The second day of the three-day regular season-ending conference championships takes place Sunday at Bunker Hills Golf Course.
