COON RAPIDS, Minn. — The second time around the Bunker Hills Golf Course was not as kind to the Saint Mary's University men's golf team Sunday afternoon.
A day after shooting an opening-round 324, the Cardinals struggled to a 333 during the second day of the three-day, 54-hole Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, leading SMU sitting in 10th place with 18 holes to play.
Blake Westerberg (Red Wing, Minn.), coming off a five-over-par 77 on Saturday, settled for a second-round 81 for a 158 total.
Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) equaled Westerberg's Sunday team low with an 81 of his own and is at 161 after two rounds.
Connor Brandt (Woodbury, Minn.) shot an 88 Sunday after opening with an 80 for a 168 total, while
Trevor Erickson (Sparta, Wis. / 87-83—170) and
Alex Kren (87-88—175) rounded out the Cardinals' lineup.
Saint John's could not match its opening round one-under 287, slipping to a Day 2 309, but the Johnnies still take a four-shot lead over Bethel heading into Monday's final round. Augsburg is third, 10 shots back, followed by St. Thomas and Concordia.
Brett Drazler of Saint John's owns the 36-hole individual lead, shooting a second-round 74 for a one-under 143 total. Teammate Casey Vangsness is three shots back at 146, followed by Brandon Jones of Augsburg (147), Davis Tollette of Bethel (148) and Augsburg's Brett Gaustad (149).
The Cardinals return to Bunker Hills on Monday morning for the final round of the season-ending conference tournament.
