COON RAPIDS, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's golf team in general — and
Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) in particular — saved their best for last at the 54-hole Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
Wolford fired a three-over-par 75 — including a one-over 37 on the final round's back nine — leading the Cardinals to their best team score of the tournament, a third-round 322 and a 10th-place overall finish.
Saint John's completed its wire-to-wire run to the team title, finishing with a third-round 302 for an 898 total and an eight-stroke win over runner-up St. Thomas. Bethel was third (908), followed by Concordia (912) and Augsburg (914).
Wolford, who opened the tournament with rounds of 80 and 81, equaled his season-best score with his final-round three-over 75 to give him a 54-hole total of 236, one shot back of team-leader
Blake Westerberg (Red Wing, Minn.) — who posted his second 77 of the tournament on Monday to finish at 235 (77-81-77).
Trevor Erickson (Sparta, Wis.) carded his second straight 83 on Monday to finish at 253 (87-83-83), followed by
Connor Brandt (Woodbury, Minn. / 80-88-89—257) and
Alex Kren (Neillsville, Wis. / 87-88-87—262).
Brett Draxler of Saint John's earned conference medalist honors, shooting a two-over-par 54-hole total of 218 (69-74-75), which included a third-round 72, to beat Concordia's Landon Poss by five shots. Augsburg's Brandon Jones (72-75-77—224) was third, while Bennett Schroeder of St. Thomas (74-76-75—225) and the Johnnies' Casey Vangsness (67-79-79—225) tied for fourth.
