BLAINE, Minn. — Saint Mary's University men's hockey coach Bill Moore admitted that he saw his share of good — and bad — during the Cardinals' season-opener against Augsburg at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Hockey Showcase at Fogerty Arena.

Unfortunately for the SMU head coach, there was more bad than good, as Augsburg rode a three-goal second period to a 6-2 nonconference victory over the Cardinals Friday.

"I thought we did some nice things — our power play and penalty kill were both pretty solid," said Moore. "But I wasn't overly happy with our overall effort — especially in the second period.

"We have got to put forth a better effort than we did tonight if we are going to be successful."

Corbin Chapman got the Auggies on the board first, banging a rebound past SMU goalie Mitch Fernsler (York, Pa.) at 6:53.

The Auggies would push that lead to 2-0 on a goal by Drew Allen two minutes into the second period, before erupting for a pair of goals by Nicholas Widing and Dylan Meier 13 seconds apart midway through the frame to push the Augsburg lead to 4-0.

The four-goal cushion didn't last long, however, as Bobby Thompson (Centerville, Minn.) answered for the Cardinals 52 seconds after Meier's goal to pull SMU within three, 4-1, heading into the third period.

Bob Marx (Sioux City, Iowa) got the Cardinals within two, 4-2 at 8:49 of the third period, but Augsburg again had an answer, scoring twice in a four-minute span to make it a 6-2 score.

The Cardinals went 1-for-6 on the power-play, while Augsburg managed just one goal in 10 power-play chances — including a pair of 5-on-3 man advantages.

Fernsler finished with 35 saves in his first collegiate start, while John Bretzman made 20 saves in goal for the Auggies.

The Cardinals (0-1-0) are back in action on Sunday, squaring off against St. Olaf in a 2:30 p.m. MIAC Men's Hockey Showcase game at Fogerty Arena.
