WINONA, Minn. ¬— The Saint Mary's University baseball team put up three runs in both of its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games against Gustavus Sunday afternoon at Max Molock Field.

In the opener, three runs was more than enough, as starter Steph Scatassa (Westchester, Ill.) and reliever Tyler Krysiak (Bloomington, Minn.) combined on a five-hit shutout in leading SMU to a 3-0 victory.

In the nightcap, however, three runs wasn't quite enough, as Gustavus earned the conference split scoring four runs in the first two innings combined and holding off an SMU rally for a 5-3 victory.

Scatassa was the man of the hour in the opener, as the freshman scattered five hits — and allowed just one runner to reach second base — in evening his record at 2-2. Scatassa, who walked one and struck out three, gave way to Krysiak in the seventh, and the SMU closer shut down the Gusties for his team-leading third save of the season.

The Cardinals scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning, as Willie Doll (Amherst, Wis.) delivered a run-scoring single and David Barry (Apple Valley, Minn.) added a two-run double.

Doll was the only Cardinal with more than one his in the opener, as the freshman went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Barry, Kyle Servais (Westby, Wis.) and Kevin Gannon (Roselle, Ill.) accounted for SMU other three hits.

The Gusties raced out to a 4-0 lead after posting back-to-back two-run innings in the first and second, only to have SMU cut the gap to two, 4-2, with two runs in the third — the first on an RBI groundout by Gannon and the second on a Doll run-scoring single.

The Cardinals made it a one-run game in the fourth when Vince Lulic (Mendota Heights, Minn.) delivered a clutch RBI single to score Barry. That, however, would be as close as SMU would get, as the Gusties plated an insurance run in the fifth and held the Cardinals off the board in their final three at-bats.

Servais, Gannon and Paul LaNasa (Mahtomedi, Minn.) all had two hits to pace the Cardinals' 11-hit Game 2 attack, while Lulic, Gannon and Doll each drove in a run.

SMU (4-6 MIAC, 13-12) — which has now split its last four conference doubleheaders — return to the diamond on Tuesday, as the Cardinals host Hamline in a 2:30 p.m. MIAC twinbill at Max Molock Field.
