All-MIAC Baseball Team
WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary's University's
Tyler Krysiak (Bloomington, Minn.) found himself among some elite company this season, as the sophomore right-hander etched his name in the Cardinal baseball record book not once, but twice.
Wednesday, Krysiak joined yet another elite group, being named First-Team All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, after helping guide the Cardinals to their second straight MIAC Tournament appearance.
And Krysiak wasn't the only Cardinal who turned a few heads this season, as freshman
Willie Doll (Amherst, Wis.) joined his hard-throwing teammate on the MIAC stage after being named to the MIAC All-Defensive Team.
After kicking off his collegiate career posting six saves as a freshman last season, Krysiak made sure there would be no sophomore slump in 2013 — while also making a name for himself as the stopper of the Cardinal pitching staff. He appeared in half of SMU's 20 conference games out of the bullpen, compiling a 1-1 record and a 2.61 ERA, while recording an SMU single-season record seven saves — giving him a school-record 13 career saves in two seasons. Opponents hits just .195 against Krysiak, who surrendered just three earned runs and struck out five in his 10 conference appearances.
Doll also took the conference by storm in 2013 — and not just with his bat. Doll hit .281 in SMU's 20 conference games, going 18-for-64 with team lead in runs (10), doubles (3), home runs (2) and total bases (27), before even more impressive, the freshman was flawless in the outfield, boasting a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, compiling 35 putouts in 35 chances.
Regular-season and MIAC Tournament-champion St. Thomas took home three of the conference's four individual awards, as the Tommies' Tim Kuzniar was named the Max Molock Most Valuable Player, while teammate Dylan Thomas was the Mike Augustin Pitcher of the Year and Chris Olean collected his second straight MIAC Coach of the Year honor. Carleton's Hayden Tsutsui was tabbed the MIAC Rookie of the Year.
As part of the conference-wide sportsmanship initiative, the MIAC also announced the seventh annual All-MIAC Sportsmanship team for baseball, which included SMU's
Matt Tessmer (West St. Paul, Minn.).
