MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's and women's cross country teams kick off their 2013 season on Saturday, taking part in the Augsburg Invitational at Riverside Park.

The SMU men's 14th-place finish at the season-ending NCAA Central Regional was their highest finish in coach Ward Berndt's eight-year tenure, while the SMU women jumped up three places from a year ago en route to their 20th-place effort. … Aaron Haley (Plainview, Minn.), who set the school's eight-kilometer record with a time of 26:00 at the Jim Drews Invitational on Oct. 13, narrowly missed rewriting the record books again at the MIAC Championships, clocking a time of 26:03 to finish 13th overall and earn First-Team All-MIAC honors. … Jake Traxler (Le Center, Minn.) and Peter Borash (Bowlus, Minn.) were right on Haley's heels, stopping the clock in 26:18 and 26:21 to place 17th and 18th, respectively, at the MIAC Championships to land on the All-MIAC Honorable-Mention team. … The MIAC performances of Haley, Traxler and Borash marked the first time in coach Ward Berndt's eight-year tenure that the Cardinals have had three runners in the top 20 at the conference championships. … The trio was at it again at the NCAA Central Regional, as Haley crossed the finish line in 26:51, while Borash and Traxler added times of 27:12 and 27:20, respectively. … Haley was the Cardinals' top finisher in each of their last four events — while the trio of Haley, Traxler and Borash were SMU's top three runners in each of the Cardinals' six meets last season. … The SMU men posted its first-ever 1-2-3 individual finish in winning the SMU No-Limit Invitational on Sept. 28. It was also the first time in the event's history that the Cardinals finished first as a team. … Katie Stolz (Forest Lake, Minn.) was the Cardinal women's leader all season — including at the MIAC Championships and NCAA Central Regional. Stolz placed 41st overall at the MIAC Championships with a six-kilometer time of 23:57, and followed that up with a time of 24:06 at the Central Regional. … Stolz clocked a career-best 6K time of 23:51 at UW-L's Tori Neubauer Invitational on Oct. 13. … Katherine Mockler (Dubuque, Iowa) posted a collegiate-best time of 24:50 at the MIAC Championships.
