WINONA, Minn. — Thanks to the foot of
Katie Holmes (Edina, Minn.), the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team had Luther right where they wanted them Wednesday evening.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, someone forgot to tell Luther's Elly Erand that.
Holmes scored her first goal of the season in the game's 18th minute to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead over the visiting Norse in the team's nonconference game at Ochrymowycz Field.
Luther answered less than a minute later, however — then got the game-winner with 23 minutes remaining in regulation — to lift the Norse to the 2-1 victory.
Holmes got the Cardinals on the board with her third collegiate goal, as the senior lofted a shot on a direct kick that eluded Luther goalkeeper Cydney Haaland and found the back of the net.
The lead, however, would not last long — 40 seconds to be exact — as Erand netted the first of her two goals on the night, taking a feed from Ellie Bunz and beating Cardinal goalie
Aubrie Cornell (Holts Summit, Mo.) to the right side.
Cornell did her part to keep the score deadlocked at 1-1, as the freshman stymied the Norse's Lydia Eager on a penalty kick with seven minutes left in the first half.
Erand broke the tie in the game's 68th minute, intercepting a Cornell goal kick and feathering a shot into the lower left-hand cover for her second of the game and third of the season.
Cornell, making her second straight start in goal for SMU, finished with six saves — including four in the first half — while Haaland had two saves in goal for Luther.
The Cardinals return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday, hosting St. Thomas in a 1 p.m. contest at Ochrymowycz Field.
