WINONA, Minn. — There's nothing like a little home cooking to get the Saint Mary's University men's golf team back on track, as the Cardinals made the most of Thursday's Cardinal Open at their home course — Cedar Valley Golf Course.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, Winona State's two teams also felt right at home at Cedar Valley, as the Warriors took the top two spots, firing rounds of 310 and 311, with Saint Mary's just nine strokes back at 319 and Bethany Lutheran taking fourth at 329.
"It's been a long time since a Saint Mary's (men's) team shot a 319 — so I'm very happy," said SMU coach Ryan Egan. "We got three rounds in the 70s, which was great to see. Hopefully, this is a sign of good things to come."
Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals, firing a three-over-par 75 to finish third overall, while
Trevor Erickson (Sparta, Wis.) and
Blake Westerberg (Red Wing, Minn.) added seven-over 79s.
Connor Brandt (Woodbury, Minn.) chipped in an 86 and
Dylan Altendorf tallied a 99 for the Cardinals.
Winona State's Al Zeyen earned medalist honors with a two-over 74, while the Warrior's Nick Hernandez and Mitch Holm equaled Wolford's three-over 75.
The Cardinals are right back in action on Saturday and Sunday, as SMU heads to Majestic Oaks Golf Course in Ham Lake, Minn., to take part in the Augsburg Invitational.
