WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's golf team begins a busy four-day stretch on Thursday, hosting Bethany Lutheran and Winona State in a triangular at Cedar Valley GC, before heading to Majestic Oaks GC in Ham Lake, Minn., to take part in the Augsburg Invitational Saturday and Sunday.

The Cardinals got a pair of 79s from Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Blake Westerberg (Red Wing, Minn.), but it was not enough, as SMU dropped a 324-336 decision to Macalester in its season-opening dual at The Jewel in Lake City, Minn., last Friday.

SMU vs. Bethany Lutheran — A Year Ago:
September 6, 2012: After struggling to a 342 total in falling to Macalester in their season opener, the Cardinals whittled 17 strokes off that mark at the Bethany Lutheran Triangular at the Lakeside Country Cub. Host Bethany Lutheran won the three-team triangular, shooting a 307, while Carleton was second at 320 and SMU was third at 327.

SMU at Augsburg Invitational — A Year Ago:
September 8-9, 2012: The Cardinals shaved 14 strokes off its opening-day performance at the Augsburg Invitational Sunday, carding a 338 for a 690 total and a 16th-place finish. Blake Westerberg (Red Wing, Minn.) continued to be the Cardinals' low performer, as the freshman followed up his Day 1 79 with an 82 for a 161 36-hole total.

The Cardinals' Up Next:
The Cardinals return to action next weekend, taking part in the 36-hole Saint John's Invitational. Day 1 of the two-day tournament will be played at Greystone Golf Course in Sauk Center, Minn., with the final round take place at Blackberry Ridge Golf Course in Sartell, Minn.

Thursday's triangular against Bethany Lutheran and Winona State at Cedar Valley GC is the lone home match of the season for the Cardinals. … Blake Westerberg (Red Wing, Minn.), the Cardinals' top performance during his freshman campaign a year ago with an 8.03 stroke overage, shared the team lead in SMU's dual-match loss to Macalester last Friday, shooting a seven-over-par 79. … Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.), who missed all of last season with a knee injury, equaled Westerberg's seven-over 79, while Trevor Erickson (Sparta, Wis.) added an 85. … Connor Brandt (Woodbury, Minn.) actually recorded SMU's low 18-hole score against the Scots — carding a 77 — but the freshman was playing as an individual, and not part of the Cardinals' five-man roster.
