GameDay Preview
HAM LAKE, Minn. — After opening the two-day Augsburg Invitational with a 331 total, the Saint Mary's University men's golf team whittled five strokes off that first-round score when they toured Majestic Oaks Golf Course for the second round on Sunday.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, that five-shot improvement wasn't enough to lift them up the leaderboard, as SMU settled for a 13th-place finish in the 36-hole event.
"It's good to see us putting together some lower scores — both individually and as a team," said SMU coach Ryan Egan. "But there's still room for improvement — I know we've still got better scores in us."
Blake Westerberg (Red Wing, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals, putting together back-to-back five-over-par 77s for a 154 two-day total and a 15th-place individual finish.
Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) tallied a six-over 78 on Saturday and followed that up with an 82 on Sunday for a 160 total.
Connor Brandt (Woodbury, Minn.),
Trevor Erickson (Sparta, Wis.) and
David Iten (Fridley, Minn.) played "copy-cat" all weekend, as the trio each shot 88 on Saturday and returned on Sunday with three straight 84s for 172 36-hole totals.
The University of Manitoba ran away with the team total, shooting a five-over 581 to outdistance Gustavus by 35 shots. Saint John's was third at 618, while Concordia (619) and Bethel (631) rounded out the top five.
Manitoba's Charlie Boyechko and Josh Wytinck shared medalist honors, firing even-par 36-hole totals of 144. Augsburg's Brandon Jones was third (146), followed by Manitoba's Burke Wiebe (147) and Noel Ngo (148).
The Cardinals are back in action next weekend, taking part in the 36-hole Saint John's Invitational. Day 1 of the two-day tournament will be played at Greystone Golf Course in Sauk Center, Minn., with the final round take place at Blackberry Ridge Golf Course in Sartell, Minn.
