MADISON, Wis. — Defensively, the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team was near-perfect Sunday afternoon, as the Cardinals limited Edgewood to a single, first-half goal in the teams' nonconference game.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, that one goal proved to be enough, as the Eagles handed SMU a 1-0 setback.
Edgewood's Jennifer Dailey broke a scoreless deadlock 15 minutes into the opening half, picking up a loose ball and drilling a shot past SMU goalkeeper
Aubrie Cornell (Holts Summit, Mo.) for her first of the season — and the only goal of the contest.
Cornell, making the second start of her collegiate career, finished with six saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Tori Fortney earned the shutout in goal for Edgewood.
The Cardinals are now off until Sept. 18, when SMU kicks off Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a 5 p.m. showdown at Ochrymowycz Field.
