WINONA, Minn. — After failing to score in their 4-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Augsburg Friday, the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team got its offense shifted out of neutral Saturday, netting single goals in each of the first two periods.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, Augsburg also kicked its offense up a notch, improving on its four-goal Friday performance by one, as the Auggies scored the game's first two goals and never relinquished the lead in handing SMU a 5-2 setback at the SMU Ice Arena.
"We just did not come to play today," said SMU coach
Terry Mannor. "Our first two goals (Friday night) and our first three goals today were all coverage goals — and that's something we've been working hard on the past several weeks.
"I don't know what the problem was — we just didn't have any jump at all."
Savannah Seeger got the Auggies on the board at 16:09 of the first period, and Rachel Hennessy made it 2-0 less than two minutes later. The two goal lead, however, lasted all of 10 seconds, as SMU's
Mary DeBartolo (Chicago, Ill.) cut the deficit to one.
Augsburg's Kendall Christian would score the only goal of the second period, giving the Auggies a 3-1 advantage heading into the final stanza.
And in the third period, the Auggies sandwiched goals by Callen Naasz and Danielle Heitkamp around a goal by SMU's
Jesse Cwik (Chicago, Ill.) to seal the victory.
Sarah Gustafson (Esko, Minn.) finished with 25 saves for the Cardinals, while Brianna Schulz kicked out 23 SMU shots in goal for the Auggies.
The Cardinals (4-10-0 MIAC, 6-14-1 overall) return to action next weekend, as SMU hosts Concordia in a pair of conference games at the SMU Ice Arena. The Cardinals and Cobbers will square off at 7 p.m. on Friday, with a 2 p.m. start in Saturday's rematch.
