CAROL STREAM, Ill. — Big innings haunted the Saint Mary's University baseball team during its 10-game spring trip to Tucson, Ariz., two weeks ago.
Unfortunately for coach
Nick Winecke, it was more of the same when SMU took to the field Friday afternoon, as Edgewood scored seven of its 10 runs during a three-run fifth and four-run sixth in the Eagles' 10-2 nonconference victory at Lee Pfund Stadium.
After three perfect innings, the Eagles finally broke through against SMU starter
Ben Dobosenski (Westmont, Ill.) in the fourth.
Andrew Lauritzen was hit by a pitch to open the fourth, stole second, and, after an infield single by Alex Jaskulski — the first of the game off Dobosenski — stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick Lehner.
Edgewood would push its advantage to 4-0 with a three-run fifth, highlighted by a one-out double off the bat of Marc Ostrowski and a run-scoring triple from Lauritzen.
SMU got on the board in its half of the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-1, as
Ben Buerkle (Roseville, Minn.) led off with a double, moved to third on an error by Edgewood pitcher Trevor Koehn, and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Paul LaNasa (Mahtomedi, Minn.).
Unfortunately, Edgewood's offense was far from finished, scoring four times in the sixth and twice in the eighth — and all SMU could counter with was a bases-loaded RBI walk by
Willie Doll (Amherst, Wis.) in the bottom of the seventh — as the Eagles handed the Cardinals their second straight loss.
The Cardinals were limited to just three hits — Buerkle's double and singles by LaNasa and
David Barry (Apple Valley, Minn.) — while LaNasa and Doll drove in SMU's two runs.
Dobosenski suffered the pitching loss, as Edgewood — after being held hitless through the game's first three innings — tagged the freshman for seven runs and eight hits over the next 2 1/3 innings.
Ostrowski, Brad Clark and Ryan O'Dell sparked Edgewood's 11-hit attack with two hits each, while Danny Appino drove in three runs for the Eagles.
The Cardinals are right back on the diamond at 5 p.m. Friday, as SMU squares off against Wheaton (Ill.) in its second nine-inning game of the day.
