TUCSON, Ariz. — It's not often that the Saint Mary's University baseball team has to travel all the way to Arizona to play a doubleheader against fellow Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent St. Olaf.

But that was the scenario on Friday, as the Cardinals and Oles squared off in a nonconference twinbill during the teams' spring trip.

The Cardinals flexed their offensive muscle in the first game, banging out 13 hits and scoring a season-high 10 runs in beat St. Olaf 10-2. Unfortunately, the Oles turned the tables in the nightcap, scoring 10 unanswered runs in beating SMU 10-6.

"I thought we really played well in the first game — we swung the bats well and took advantage of (St. Olaf's) mistakes," said SMU coach Nick Winecke. "Problem was, that's exactly what St. Olaf did in the second game — they took advantage of our mistakes."

Ben Dobosenski (Westmont, Ill.) was the hero of Game 1, as the freshman right-hander limited the Oles to just four hits in five innings of work en route to recording his first collegiate pitching win.

The Cardinals certainly gave Dobosenski plenty of run support, breaking a 1-1 tie by scoring four runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth. Kevin Gannon (Roselle, Ill.) led the way for the Cardinals, going 4-for-4 — marking the second time this spring an SMU player has gone 4-for-4 in a game — while Willie Doll (Amherst, Ill.) finished 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles.

SMU appeared to have everything under control in the nightcap as well, scoring two runs in each of the first three innings to take a 6-1 advantage. St. Olaf, however, had other ideas, as the Oles plated back-to-back three-run innings in the third and fourth, before icing the win with four more runs in the sixth.

Gannon continued to swing the hot bat, going 2-for-3, while Pat Krieger (Mendota Heights, Minn.) also had two hits in three at-bats, while driving in a pair of runs.

The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday, squaring off against Bethany Lutheran in a pair of nonconference games in Tucson, Ariz.
