TUCSON, Ariz. — The Saint Mary's University baseball team played its third nonconference doubleheader of the season on Saturday, with the same outcome — a split.

This time around, however, the Cardinals needed a Game 2 win to earn the split.

After winning the opener in doubleheader splits against Morningside (Iowa) and St. Olaf, the Cardinals dropped Game 1 to Bethany Lutheran 9-3 Saturday, before rallying for a 7-2 win in the nightcap.

The Vikings erupted for six runs in the fifth inning, snapping a 3-3 tie and leading Bethany Lutheran to the win in Game 1.

SMU banged out nine hits in the opener, led by Willie Doll (Amherst, Wis.) with two hits in three at-bats. The Cardinals' other seven hits came from seven different players.

It was the Cardinals who came up with the big inning in the nightcap, as SMU scored twice in the top of the third and five times in the top of the sixth to take a 7-1 advantage in earning the split.

The Cardinals collected nine hits for the second straight game in Game 2, with David Barry (Apple Valley) leading the way, going 3-for-3 with an RBI. Ben Buerkle drove in three of th Cardinals' seven runs, delivering a three-run triple in SMU's five-run sixth.

Chris Bartosz (Woodridge, Ill.) collected his first collegiate pitching win, going 4.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits, while striking out two. Jacob Dawson () pitched the final 2.1 innings, striking out three, while allowing an unearned run on one hit.

The Cardinals are back in action on Sunday, when they close out their spring trip with a nine-inning nonconference game against Simpson.
