WINONA, Minn. — It took 23 days, but the Saint Mary's University baseball team finally got the chance to complete the second game of its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Hamline, which was suspended due to darkness after nine innings tied 9-9.

Unfortunately, the end result wasn't quite what coach Nick Winecke was hoping for.

The Cardinals, who had won the opener of the April 2 doubleheader 6-0, broke the 9-9 Game 2 tie with a run in the top of the 11th inning, only to have Hamline answer with a pair of runs in its half of the inning to hand SMU an 11-10 setback.

The Cardinals scored once in the second inning and four times in the third in the nightcap. Paul LaNasa (Mahtomedi, Minn.) and Kevin Miley (St. Paul, Minn.) accounted for all of the damage in third, with LaNasa delivering a two-run double, while Miley drove in the other two with his first collegiate home run — a bomb off HU reliever Michael Robohm over the left-field fence.

Hamline cut the deficit to 4-3 with three runs in its half of the third, but a three-run SMU fourth — highlighted by RBI singles from LaNasa and Miley, and a run-scoring double by Kevin Gannon (Roselle, Ill.) — and a one-run fifth pushed the Cardinals' lead back to six, 9-3.

But again the Pipers would answer, plating five runs in the bottom of the fifth, before tying the game 9-9 with a solo run in the eighth.

Both teams threatened in the ninth — SMU left the bases load in the top half of the inning, while Hamline put the winning on second with two out and failed to convert — but darkness forced the game to be halted.

Setting up the extra-inning fireworks.

David Barry (Apple Valley, Minn.) led off the SMU 11th with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice and scored on a Willie Doll (Amherst, Wis.) RBI double to give SMU a 10-9 advantage.

Unfortunately, the lead was short-lived, as Hamline loaded the bases with two outs — thanks to a lead-off single and a pair of hit batsmen — and Andy Sammon delivered a two-run single to hand SMU the heart-breaking setback.

Miley went 4-for-4 with three RBIs in Game 2, while Gannon, Doll and Tyler Lursen (Maple Grove, Minn.) each had two hits, and Doll and Ben Buerkle (Roseville, Minn.) drove in pair of runs.

In the opener on April 2, the Cardinals rode the right arms of Ben Johnson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and A.J. Redders (Middleton, Wis.) to a 6-0 victory over the Pipers.

SMU gave Johnson all the run support he would need in the top of the second inning of the opener, as the Cardinals took advantage of two HU errors to plate three runs.

And three runs was more than enough for Johnson, who went 5 2/3 innings, scattering five hits, while striking out four. Redders threw the final 1 1/3, not allowing a run and collecting two strikeouts to seal the win.

SMU's six hits in the opener came from six different players, highlighted by Barry's two-run single in the sixth.
