Cardinals' Miley named MIAC Athlete of the Week

MIAC Athlete of the Week

WINONA, Minn. — Kevin Miley (St. Paul, Minn.) put together his first collegiate four hit game in the second game of the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota baseball team's conference doubleheader against Hamline on April 2.

But because the game was suspended due to darkness, he wasn't "officially" recognized for the feat until the teams completed the game last Thursday.

And when you add that four-hit performance to the Saint Mary's sophomore's nine hits in the Cardinals' other six games last week, it's no wonder the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference office announced Monday afternoon that Miley had been named Athlete of the Week.

Miley kicked off the week with a double, two RBIs and a run scored in a nine-inning nonconference game against Luther last Monday, following that up with four hits in seven at-bats — including a 3-for-3 Game 2 effort — against Augsburg a day later.

And he was just getting warmed up.

Miley went a combined 4-for-6, with a home run, three RBIs and four runs scored in Saint Mary's completion of their suspended game against Hamline and a nine-inning nonconference contest against the Pipers last Thursday, before closing out the week with four hits in six at-bats — including a pair of doubles — while driving in three in the Cardinals' 7-3, 9-6 sweep of Concordia last Saturday.

All told, Miley hit .565 in seven games last week, collecting 13 hits in 23 at-bats — including four doubles and his first collegiate home run. He drove in eight runs, scored six times and boasted an .870 slugging percentage.

The Cardinals are currently in the heat of the MIAC Tournament race with four conference games remaining. Saint Mary's (9-7 MIAC) is tied for the fourth and final spot in the four-team post-season tournament with doubleheaders against St. Olaf (Wednesday) and Bethel (Sunday) remaining on the schedule.
